After the bulldozers have gone, the smashed up fragments of trees remain in and on the soil. Just perfect for the next swarm of colonising termites to set up home! These TermiteTraps attracted termites out of the old sleeper edging timbers within weeks. Treatment was successful within about 8 weeks after being discovered. The original nest is dead so the sleepers will last a lot more years.

Termites think your firewood was heaped up especially for them!

A TermiteTrap placed nearby to kill off the scrounging termite colony means you get to burn the wood instead of feeding termites. It’s a lousy idea to stack firewood so that it hides weepholes.

This is Cypress pine mulch. Termites may not eat it but they will emerge from below it and get through that weep hole.

Keep the garden level (and creepers etc.,) clear of these possible entry points so you can see at a glance if they have arrived.

Here’s a few termite options. The fence to screen the pool pump has one post in the ground and they could travel up and across to the wall, go up behind the downpipe and enter via the eaves, or, maybe through any gaps near the power point, or yes, the weep hole. (Pre-treated timber is not termite resistant unless it is H4 or H5. The H2 and H3 are only decay resistant).

f you are stacking stuff in your shed, try to keep pallets, boxes, cartons and cupboards either side of the expansion joints. The same for stacked timber. Keep timber up off the floor far enough for you to look under to see if there are any ‘mud’ trails. The gap is usually wide enough to let termites up into whatever is edible. The taxman has heard that excuse before.

You probably won’t see this unusual sight: termites have gone up the wooden pier/post and now they are building tunnels like stalactites heading down to the ground as a shortcut home.

This window frame has been hollowed out so in some parts only the paint is left. It was hidden behind heavy drapes that never moved.

Don’t make the inspection hole any bigger than this. If termites are alive inside, the soldiers will come and guard the entrance while the workers do the repair. You’ll see their antennae at the opening. If so, fix a Feeder to the frame and inspect and renew the food supply every 2-3 weeks until there is no more action.

These pine framing timbers are typical of Australian homes built since the 1950s

Our main termites mostly had Aussie hardwoods to eat before then. they’ve adapted their diet but they still find and attack it in the same old ways.

This was how termites were treated using the Colony Killer Termite Bait transferred from the original container into an aluminium foil ‘pouch.

1. The corner where termites came into the framing timbers through a gap where the tilt slabs (the walls) join.

2. A close-up of soldiers guarding the hole

3. The pouch taped to the wall and filled with ‘porridge before closing

4. The next day, the pouch was opened for a moment to see that the termites were already tunneling through and harvesting the porridge.
