There is no super termite. “Super termites” is media hype.

The termites which cause 99% of damage to Australian homes have been following the same instincts for millions of years.  They can’t change habits or mutate into a new and different threat overnight like bacteria or viruses.

The recent TV program showing the extensive damage done to an Adelaide home tells us two things: not all pest professionals are on the ball and, everyday homeowners should seek information that helps them understand termites. A simple inspection process can be followed to ensure the Adelaide event is not repeated at their place.

Humans are so much smarter than termites, even the supposed super termites.

Subterranean termites live, nest and forage through the soil and when they leave the soil to get to timber in buildings, they build protective tunnels and block up splits, cracks and crevices with a mud mixture to keep out the light and ants … and to keep in humidity. Once you know, it is relatively easy to recognize thsee signs and, because termites are always looking for new food sources, it is highly probable they will find any monitor you put out for them around your home. Baiting monitors that have been attacked is safe and almost foolproof.

Knowing where to look and what to look for is easy for homeowners that download freely available information on a couple of websites written especially for those of us with a DIY attitude. Termiteresearch.com.au has close to 40 pages of illustrated information and termitetrap.com.au even has a termite how-to guide for homeowners which explains the basic principles used by good professional pest technicians:

Use monitors outside to intercept and kill colonies

Feed bait to termites found in monitors or any timber. Baits are safe for humans, pets and wildlife but kill termites

Inspect your home twice a year... it’s a simple process.

As teacher and textbook writer, Ion Staunton, says: “Paying more doesn’t kill them any deader than dead!”
